Marine mammal experts and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Law Enforcement are conducting an investigation after a male bottlenose dolphin was found dead with a large stab wound in Florida.
The dolphin’s carcass, which was located along Upper Captiva Island in Lee County, Florida, was recovered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at the end of May, said an NOAA press release. A necropsy showed that the marine animal was impaled in the head, most likely with a spear-like device, while it was still alive.
